Brain Drain

Movement: 1

The Brain Drain is a magic-focused enemy found in The Caves with 8 HP, 2 damage, and only 1 movement. Despite its low mobility, it poses a serious strategic threat through its infinite-range Brain Missile attack and a powerful counterspell mechanic that can shut down your spellcasting cats. The Brain Drain visually signals its counter state with a distinctive drooping eye, giving attentive players a readable tell for when the counter is primed and ready.

The Brain Drain's primary attack is a white teardrop projectile trailed by sparkling stars that can hit targets at any range on the battlefield. Its signature mechanic is a once-per-turn counterspell: when any spell is directed at it while the counter is primed, the Brain Drain sends out an expanding white circle and nullifies the ability entirely. If the counterspell goes untriggered by the start of the Brain Drain's next turn, it absorbs the stored energy for a permanent buff to magic damage and health. Champions gain +All Stats instead of just magic damage, making each unused counter exponentially more dangerous as the fight drags on.

The recommended strategy is to intentionally bait the counterspell each turn with a cheap, low-cost spell before following up with your real damage abilities. This prevents the Brain Drain from accumulating buffs while keeping your important spells available for the actual attack. Physical attacks bypass the counter entirely, making melee-focused cats strong picks for this matchup. Champions have 16 HP, 3 damage, and 2 movement, and their enhanced buff absorption makes it critical to never let a counter go untriggered. A familiar version of the Brain Drain can spawn from the Weird Egg trinket with a 10% chance, and this allied version will counter both boss and regular enemy attacks on your behalf.
