A Beggar

A beggar with sad eyes holds up a small cardboard sign to {catname}.

A Beggar is a Skill Event where a sad-eyed beggar holds up a small cardboard sign asking your cat for spare change. Unlike most Skill Events that test your cat's stats with probability rolls, this event resolves purely through coin cost: you either have enough coins to donate or you don't. The event presents three Donate options at different coin tiers and a Leave option. Donating successfully rewards you with an item from the beggar's loot pool, while leaving is always safe with no consequences.

The three Donate tiers likely correspond to different coin amounts, with higher donations yielding better quality items. If you select a Donate option but lack sufficient coins, the attempt fails: your cat reaches into its pocket, realizes it doesn't have enough, and the beggar scowls at you for getting their hopes up. There is no stat-based probability involved, making the Beggar one of the few events in Mewgenics where you can guarantee an outcome by spending resources rather than relying on luck or attributes.

Compared to other donation NPCs like Jack and Tracy on the Choose Your Fate screen, the Beggar is generally considered a lower-value coin sink with a less impressive item pool. Jack and Tracy track cumulative donations across adventures and offer better returns, while the Beggar does not appear to remember anything between runs. If you have coins to spare and want a quick item, the Beggar is a fine use of resources, but if you are saving coins for Jack, Tracy, or shop purchases, the Leave option costs you nothing. The Beggar is almost certainly a nod to the Beggar mechanic in The Binding of Isaac, another Edmund McMillen game, where beggars similarly accept coin donations in exchange for random item drops.
