Steven

One of two consumables named Steven, this rare item permanently upgrades a random spell or passive ability on use. The upgrade is random but always applies to one of your actual equipped abilities, making it a powerful investment for builds that have locked in their ability loadout. Part of the Steven item set, which when complete renames your cat to Steven.

A permanent ability upgrade means whatever gets selected becomes improved for the rest of the run. The randomness is the key risk — if you have one ability that's central to your build and three others that are filler, there's still a chance it upgrades a filler ability. Use it once you've committed to a final ability loadout and when you're happy with any of your current abilities getting buffed. The ability ID cm_Steven1 distinguishes this from the clone-producing Steven (cm_Steven2).

Best used in later areas of a run when your build is fully formed and any upgrade is meaningful. Save it for after you've acquired and equipped your preferred abilities rather than using it on a transitional loadout. Collecting both Stevenses completes the Steven item set — a cosmetic goal worth pursuing if you encounter both during a run.
