Bat

Movement: 6

The Bat is a flying enemy found in The Caves, deliberately designed to be one of the most annoying creatures in the game. According to designer Edmund McMillen, the Bat was intentionally modeled after the experience of encountering Zubat in Pokemon cave areas. With only 5 HP and 1 damage per hit, the Bat is not a heavy hitter, but its exceptionally high 6 movement and 50% dodge chance make it incredibly frustrating to pin down and eliminate.

The Bat attacks with a melee flurry that lands four consecutive hits per turn. While each individual strike deals minimal damage, every hit carries a chance to inflict Confusion on the target. Stacking four Confusion chances per attack means that even a brief engagement often leaves your cat disoriented and acting unpredictably. Adding to the frustration, the Bat flees after being targeted by an attack, using its high movement to reposition across the battlefield before you can follow up. Its unusually high Luck stat of 8 (compared to the standard 5 for most enemies) directly enhances its dodge capability, making reliable hits feel like a coin flip.

The two most reliable counters to the Bat are applying the Marked status effect, which bypasses its dodge entirely, and using abilities that cannot miss. Area-of-effect attacks are also effective since the Bat's dodge only applies to targeted strikes. Champions have 10 HP, 2 damage, and 7 movement, making them even harder to catch while doubling their per-hit damage output. In encounters with multiple Bats, prioritize controlling or eliminating them quickly before Confusion stacks overwhelm your party, as a Confused cat can waste turns or even damage allies.
