Enemy
Toadie
Movement: 4
The Toadie is an ambush predator found in the Caves chapter. It disguises itself as an inanimate object — a rock or similar piece of terrain — and waits for enemies to walk past before striking. When triggered, the ambush attack inflicts the Fear status effect on its target. It may also begin battles already hidden, sitting inactive until a unit gets close enough to trigger it.
With 14 HP (28 champion), damage 5, and movement 4, the Toadie is not weak once revealed — it can hold its own in melee. On each turn it attempts a melee strike then retreats back into disguise. It prioritizes backstab opportunities and flees if all non-Toadie allies are defeated. Water tiles are a useful tell: inanimate objects don't naturally appear in water, so any suspicious object floating in it is almost certainly a Toadie.
If a room in the Caves seems unusually sparse in enemies, look carefully at every object on the floor — Toadies are likely lurking. The Marked status effect reveals their position. Area-of-effect attacks can force them out of disguise by dealing damage before they trigger. The Frying Pan item can block ambush strikes and prevent Fear application, making it a strong defensive choice in Caves encounters.
