Dunce Cap

Rare

Dunce Cap is a rare head armor that reduces INT by 2 but lowers all mana costs. The tradeoff is worth considering for spellcasting builds that don't scale heavily from INT — cheaper spells mean more casts per fight without sacrificing spell effectiveness. The INT penalty hurts INT-scaling abilities, so evaluate whether your build depends on that stat before equipping.

Mana cost reduction compounds across every ability cast in a fight: with enough reduction, abilities that previously limited you to 3 or 4 casts per combat become spammable for 6 or more. The -2 INT directly reduces the damage or effectiveness of any ability that has an INT scaling coefficient. The net result depends entirely on your specific ability list: if your spells are INT-scaled, you lose damage per cast and gain extra casts, creating a tradeoff that may or may not work out favorably. If your abilities have fixed damage regardless of INT, the cost reduction is pure gain.

Dunce Cap is strongest on builds that cast fixed-value abilities repeatedly: status appliers, utility spells, summon skills, or any ability where damage is not the point. Steven Stone reduces class-specific ability costs and stacks with Dunce Cap for further cost reductions on the overlap. Cats with very high mana pools also benefit since the cost reduction extends how long they can cast before running empty. Avoid it on high-INT damage mages where the -2 INT is too costly, and prioritize it on support or controller builds that cast often without relying on INT scaling.
