Confusion

When performing an action, 25% chance to instead hit itself equal to its strength.

Confusion is a disruptive debuff that gives the afflicted unit a 33% chance to hit itself when taking any action except movement. When a confused unit's action backfires, it deals damage to itself equal to its Strength stat, and the failed action is interrupted. Stacks reduce by 1 per turn, so the effect is temporary. Confusion does not prevent movement, but it makes attacking and casting spells unreliable and potentially self-destructive.

The self-damage from Confusion scales with the confused unit's Strength stat. Enemy units typically have around 5 Strength, meaning they deal 5 damage to themselves on a failed action. High-Strength units like melee enemies or bosses are especially dangerous to themselves when confused, making Confusion more effective against physically powerful targets. The 33% failure rate means roughly one in three actions will backfire, creating significant unreliability for the affected unit.

Confusion is applied by certain abilities and items that disrupt enemy coordination. It is particularly effective against enemies with multiple actions per turn, as each action has an independent 33% chance to fail. When your own cats become confused (from enemy abilities or environmental hazards), the best strategy is to focus on movement and positioning rather than attacking, since movement is not affected by Confusion. Confusion pairs well with other control effects like Slow or Immobile to create turns where confused enemies can neither move effectively nor act reliably.
