What is the Golden Idol?

Date Published

The Golden Idol is a Cursed Trinket in Mewgenics. While equipped, it applies a -2 Luck penalty to your cat for the rest of the run. In return, it converts into 500 coins when you successfully return home — making it one of the best sources of raw income in the game if you can survive the run with reduced Luck.

How to Get the Golden Idol

The Golden Idol is obtained from the Pit of Snakes event, a random encounter during roguelike runs. In this event, your cat stumbles upon a pit full of venomous snakes and must choose how to proceed. There are three options, each tied to a different stat check:

Fight (STR) — Your cat dives into the pit and battles the snakes. On success, the snakes are dispatched. On failure, your cat is bitten and poisoned.

Jump Over (DEX) — Your cat attempts to leap over the pit. On success, you get past without a scratch. On failure, your cat lands in the pit and gets bitten.

Charm (CHA) — Your cat tries to charm the snakes. On success, a snake leaves the pit to join your party. On failure, the snakes chase after your cats, biting and poisoning them.

Is It Worth Taking?

The Golden Idol is a textbook risk-vs-reward trade. Losing 2 Luck affects drop rates, critical hit chances, and event outcomes for the rest of your run. If your cat already has high Luck or you are on an easy run, the penalty is manageable and the 500-coin payout is extremely generous — enough to buy several pieces of furniture or stock up on items.

On the other hand, if your cat is already struggling or you are deep into a difficult run, the Luck penalty can snowball into worse loot, missed crits, and unfavorable event rolls. Keep in mind that you only receive the coins if you make it home — dying with the Golden Idol means you absorbed the penalty for nothing.
