Spiky is the boss variant of the Thorns buff, granting 2 stacks of Thorns instead of the enemy version's 1 stack. Every melee contact with the boss deals 2 damage back to the attacker. Contact occurs through melee attacks and knockback collisions. The boss has a dark grey semi-transparent tint with a spike particle effect. The doubled Thorns damage makes melee engagement significantly more costly than against the regular enemy variant.

Two Thorns stacks on a boss means melee cats lose 2 health per hit, which accumulates rapidly across a long boss fight. Multi-hit melee abilities are especially punished, as each strike takes 2 health from your attacker. A 5-hit melee combo costs 10 health in Thorns damage alone, which can kill fragile melee cats over just a few turns. Spiky bosses effectively force your team to either absorb significant self-damage or switch to ranged strategies, limiting your tactical options.

Ranged attacks bypass Thorns completely. If your team is melee-focused, invest in Shield and healing to offset the 2-damage-per-hit cost. High-damage single-hit melee attacks are more efficient than multi-hit strikes since you only take 2 Thorns damage once per attack regardless of how much damage you deal. Classes with self-healing or lifesteal mechanics can sustain through the Thorns damage. Avoid knocking the Spiky boss into your own cats, as the collision triggers Thorns against them. If possible, bring at least one ranged damage dealer to handle Spiky bosses without the Thorns tax.
