Nettle

Spiny plant that damages units who pass through it.

Nettle is a plant-based melee attacker found in The Crater with 11 HP. Named after the stinging plant, Nettle is defined by its Thorns mechanic that punishes anyone who attacks it directly. Each turn it applies Thorns to itself, causing retaliatory damage to any unit that strikes it in melee, creating a natural deterrent against the most common form of attack. This makes Nettle a uniquely frustrating enemy that turns your own aggression against you.

Nettle attacks in melee and gains Thorns at the start of its turn, reflecting damage back to any unit that hits it with a physical attack. Additionally, whenever a spell (any ability other than a basic attack) is used against it, Nettle emits a Sparkle, providing a reactive response to magical attacks as well. This dual-response system means both physical and magical approaches carry consequences, making Nettle more tactically complex than its simple stat line suggests.

Ranged physical attacks are the most efficient counter to Nettle, as they deal damage without triggering melee Thorns retaliation and are not classified as spells that would trigger the Sparkle reaction. If ranged options are not available, use high-HP cats that can absorb the Thorns rebound damage without being significantly weakened. At 11 HP, Nettle is not particularly durable, so concentrated ranged fire can eliminate it in one or two turns. In encounters with other Crater enemies, handle Nettles after addressing higher-priority targets like Hemlock healers or Carnibulb instant-killers, unless the Thorns damage is causing significant attrition.
