Overview
Fenrir is an early miniboss encountered mid-chapter in The Alley. With only 60 HP, he may seem fragile, but his high Speed stat gives him multiple actions per round and he compensates for low health with bear traps, tall grass hiding (50% dodge chance), and melee deflection. Going in with a melee-heavy party without a plan is likely to cost you cats before the real boss fight at the end of the Alley.
Key Mechanics
Bear Traps
Fenrir's signature move is placing bear traps on tiles around your party. Traps turn invisible after being placed, and a cat that steps onto a trapped tile takes damage and loses a turn. He often places multiple traps in a single round, quickly denying large sections of the board to melee attackers. Traps can be destroyed by attacking them from range, so clearing traps should be your first priority every round.
Tall Grass Hiding
Fenrir hides in tall grass, gaining a 50% dodge chance while concealed. This makes him frustrating to pin down with single attacks. Multi-hit abilities or AoE attacks that do not rely on individual hit accuracy are more reliable for damage while he is in grass.
Melee Deflect
Fenrir deflects direct melee attacks, returning a portion of damage to the attacker. Basic melee swings will hurt your cats more than they hurt Fenrir. This makes melee classes like Fighter and Tank much less effective than usual and reinforces the need for reliable ranged damage.
Multiple Actions Per Round
Fenrir acts more than once per turn due to his high SPD stat. He can lay traps, reposition, and attack all in the same round. He is one of the most mobile enemies in early Act 1 content.
Recommended Team Composition
Hunter is the ideal class here: high range means traps are rarely a threat, and Hunter abilities bypass melee deflect entirely. Mage is a strong second option with area-of-effect spells that can hit both Fenrir and his traps simultaneously. If you only have melee cats, a Thief or Druid with repositioning or teleport abilities can help maintain safe distance while getting chip damage in.
Step-by-Step Strategy
1. On each round, identify all bear traps on the board before moving any cat. Use ranged basic attacks to destroy any traps in movement paths before advancing. Remember that traps turn invisible, so be cautious about tiles you have not confirmed as safe.
2. Keep melee cats at the back and focus them on safe tiles. Do not risk stepping into a new trap zone when you still have ranged options available.
3. Assign your strongest ranged attacker to focus Fenrir directly. Hunter multi-shots and Mage spells deal solid damage without triggering his melee deflect.
4. If Fenrir repositions aggressively, use the turns between his bursts to regroup and clear the new trap field before following up. Do not chase recklessly.
Drops
Fenrir drops random items on defeat. Confirmed examples include Body Spray and Stem Cells trinkets. These can be useful early-run picks regardless of class, so it is worth fighting Fenrir even if the encounter looks risky.
