The Alley
Urban, Back Alley
The Alley is the starting area of Mewgenics and the first taste of the game's roguelike combat. Set in a grimy urban back alley littered with dumpsters, trash bags, and refuse, it introduces players to the core loop of battling through rooms, collecting loot, and facing a chapter boss. Destructible trash bags and boxes scattered throughout battles drop money and items, rewarding thorough exploration of each encounter. The area's theme song, "Eatin' Rats," sets the tone for this grungy urban battlefield.
The enemy pool here is relatively forgiving: stray Kittens, Rats, Maggots, Flies, and Fleas make up the fodder, while Pooters, Leapers, and the dangerous Cat Caller pose slightly more threat. Tom Toms and Mangy cats round out the roster as tougher encounters. Mini-bosses include Fenrir, Lucy, Maisie, and Magnus.
The Alley features two possible bosses. Radical Rat (67 HP) throws rat bombs that explode in cross patterns across 10 tiles, with a maximum of two active at once. Each bomb has just 1 HP and can be defused with any source of damage, and water tiles automatically neutralize them. Avoid fire abilities here, as they cause instant chain detonations. When cornered on his final turn, Radical Rat hides in a trash can for invulnerability, so burst him down before that point. Queen Hippo (80 HP) takes a different approach: she starts with Brace 4 and 2 bonus turns, losing 1 Brace per round while gaining 1 Movement Up. If you strip all her Brace using abilities like Bloodletting, she dies of a heart attack instantly. Ranged classes can otherwise kite her while her Jab and Uppercut attacks punish melee-range cats with chain knockback.
Completing The Alley and speaking with Butch unlocks the Cleric class. After clearing The Caves later in Act 1, a hard path through The Alley opens up, leading to The Junkyard as an alternate Chapter 2. The hard path rewards a Rare Treasure and 5 to 10 bonus Food. Exclusive loot from The Alley includes Cardboard gear (Shield, weak to Wet), Leather equipment (Shield plus Brace), Paper items (Bleed Thorns), and the TrashCan helmet, which offers high Shield, Brace, and Blind resistance.
