Disorder

Schrödinger's Syndrome

50% chance to start each battle dead, or alive with max hp and all stats up.

Schrodinger's Syndrome is one of the most dramatic disorders in the game: each battle begins with a 50/50 coin flip that either starts your cat dead or alive with max HP and All Stats Up. When the flip goes well, your cat enters battle at full health with a powerful stat buff, making it stronger than almost any other starting condition. When it goes badly, the cat is dead from the start and cannot contribute at all.

Schrodinger's Syndrome is heritable and can pass from parent to kitten through breeding. It can also be acquired through events or applied with a Disorder Syringe from the Organ Grinder. The reference to Schrodinger's famous thought experiment is clear: until the battle starts, the cat is simultaneously alive and dead. The 50% death chance is extremely high variance, making this disorder a gamble every single fight.

Strategically, Schrodinger's Syndrome is a pure gambling disorder. In the best case, your cat starts with max HP and All Stats Up, which is an incredible advantage. In the worst case, you are fighting with one fewer party member. The disorder works better in parties with multiple cats that can compensate when the Schrodinger cat starts dead. It pairs interestingly with Kamikaze (explodes on death), which would trigger immediately in the dead-start scenario. For consistent performance, replace this disorder; for chaotic fun, keep it and enjoy the coin flips.
