Enemy

Tatters

Movement: 5

Tatters is a tattered undead enemy found in The Boneyard that enters combat in a uniquely weakened state, starting at only 1 out of its maximum 20 HP. Despite this seemingly fragile condition, it compensates with a substantial 8 shield and 5 movement, making it deceptively durable and mobile. Tatters can also appear as the second phase of a Robes enemy, which transforms into Tatters upon death, creating a two-stage fight that catches unprepared players off guard.

Tatters deals no direct damage through its attacks. Instead, it uses an area-of-effect spell that inflicts Leech on all enemies within range, draining health from your cats and healing itself or nearby allies. As a defensive mechanism, any unit that damages Tatters is cursed with Hex as retaliation. This creates a painful dilemma: leaving Tatters alive allows it to continuously Leech your party, but attacking it punishes you with Hex. If given enough time to drain health through its Leech attacks, Tatters can recover from its near-death starting condition and become a much more substantial threat.

The key to defeating Tatters efficiently is shield-bypassing damage. Abilities like Poison Nail and Pierce ignore its 8 shield entirely, letting you reach the tiny 1 HP health pool underneath and kill it before it has a chance to heal. Brute-forcing through the shield is wasteful and gives Tatters time to accumulate health via Leech. Champions are even more problematic at 2/40 HP with 16 shield and 6 movement, requiring even more focused shield-piercing to handle. When encountering Robes in The Boneyard, always plan for the Tatters phase that follows its death.
