The Coven

Group encounter at the end of The Core. Target for the Glowing Black Shard activation (part of The Rift unlock quest chain).

The Coven is the Act 2 Core boss at 300 HP, a group-combat encounter that requires defeating a collective of witches rather than a single enemy. The boss arena features a large inverted pentagram on the ground with a 50 HP candle on each point of the star and The Coven positioned in the center. This fight cannot be won through brute force alone; it demands careful management of the arena's candles and preparation for the real threat that emerges at the end. Critically, using the Glowing Black Shard on The Coven activates the obelisk needed to unlock The Rift, making this fight a key progression gate for endgame content.

The Coven follows a four-turn pattern based on the Four Horsemen. Each turn, one of the Coven's four bodies rises, gaining +1 Brace per risen body. Round 1 (Plague) summons 4 poison frogs. Round 2 (Famine) summons a large swarm of flies. Round 3 (War) bombards a random tile for 5 damage and creates a lava tile. Round 4 (Death) summons a Tormentor, which kills The Coven by devouring it. The Tormentor then becomes the real boss of the encounter, and its power scales based on how many candles remain intact around the pentagram. Each surviving candle grants the Tormentor additional abilities, so destroying or extinguishing all five candles before Round 4 is the single most important objective in this fight.

Water and Wind element abilities can extinguish candles instantly without needing to deal 50 damage, making Druid and Mage classes nearly essential for this encounter. Turning a candle's tile into a puddle of water is equally effective, as The Coven cannot reclaim extinguished candles. A Druid or Mage with access to elemental spells trivializes the candle management phase, letting the rest of your team focus on clearing the summoned frogs and flies. The Glowing Black Shard provides an alternative path, instantly killing The Coven and bypassing the entire encounter if you have obtained this special quest item. Defeating The Coven rewards the Butcher class unlock and triggers a new house boss, Pyrophina, adding another layer of challenge to your home defense roster.
