Water Leech

Movement: 3

The Water Leech is a terrain-dependent enemy found in The Sewers and The Rift that transforms from a harmless slug into a devastating predator depending on whether it has access to water. With 8 HP (out of a max 18), 4 damage, and drastically different movement speeds on land versus water, the Water Leech represents one of the clearest examples of environment-based enemy design in Mewgenics. Its threat level can swing from negligible to lethal based entirely on the battlefield layout.

When positioned in water, the Water Leech gains 5 movement and performs a devastating dash attack with infinite range that pierces through multiple units in a straight line, dealing damage with lifesteal to every target it passes through. This makes it extremely dangerous in water-heavy stages where it can heal itself while damaging your entire formation in a single pass. On land, its movement drops to just 1 (functionally 3 in base stats but severely reduced), and it becomes sluggish and nearly harmless as it desperately seeks the nearest water tile to reposition.

The most effective counter strategy is terrain manipulation: removing all water from the stage renders the Water Leech essentially helpless, turning a terrifying predator into a slow-moving target. Abilities that freeze, evaporate, or otherwise eliminate water tiles can neutralize the threat before it ever attacks. If terrain manipulation is not available, keeping your cats out of straight-line paths from water tiles prevents the piercing dash from hitting multiple units. Champions have 16 HP (out of 36 max), 5 damage, and 6 water movement, making their dash attacks even more devastating and their lifesteal recovery even harder to overcome.
