Overview
Mama Maggot is a miniboss encountered mid-chapter in The Boneyard. She fits the zone's theme of undead summons and vermin infestation. Rather than attacking your cats directly, Mama Maggot spends most of her turns spawning Maggots and evolving them into stronger variants, then granting them bonus turns. She will generally try to keep her distance from your party while her swarm does the work.
Key Mechanics
Maggot Evolution
Mama Maggot can evolve basic Maggots into one of three stronger variants: Thorn Maggots that set traps in spaces around their attack target, Tunnel Maggots that change random targets and locations as they move, and Rushing Maggots that charge forward aggressively. Evolved Maggots receive bonus turns from Mama Maggot, making them significantly more dangerous than their base form.
Trample
Mama Maggot herself has Trample, allowing her to damage cats she moves through. Do not assume she is harmless just because she prefers to stay at range.
General Strategy
Bring area-of-effect abilities if possible. AoE damage can hit the boss and her adds simultaneously, preventing the board from being overrun. Focus on killing Maggots before Mama Maggot can evolve them. Abilities like Soul Reap that remove enemies entirely are especially effective, since killing Maggots denies Mama Maggot targets to evolve on her turns.
If any Maggots do get evolved, kill them immediately before they receive bonus turns. Keep your cats' backs against a solid wall (environmental walls or the level boundary) to limit the angles that evolved Maggots can approach from. This is especially important against Thorn Maggots, whose traps become less effective when your positioning options are deliberate rather than reactive.
Conserve your class abilities for Dybbuk at the end of The Boneyard branch, as that fight has strict mechanical requirements that basic attacks cannot meet alone.
