Queen Hippo Boss Guide

Overview

Queen Hippo is the alternate final boss of The Alley. She has an enormous HP pool, high Brace (damage reduction), and accelerates her movement speed each round. The defining quirk of this fight is that she has a scripted death at the end of Round 4: if she is still alive when Round 4 ends, she dies automatically. This means the fight has two viable strategies: survive to the timer or burst her down before the timer matters.

Key Mechanics

High Brace

Queen Hippo has high Brace, which reduces the damage she takes from most attacks. This makes standard physical attackers feel weak and discourages trying to brute-force her without a plan. Abilities that bypass Brace, apply damage-over-time, or deal percentage-HP damage are significantly more effective than raw melee hits.

Escalating Speed

Each round Queen Hippo’s movement speed increases. In Round 1 she is slow and telegraphed. By Round 3 she is fast enough to cross the arena and chain knockbacks in a single turn. This creates a race condition: if you cannot deal meaningful damage early, the fight becomes progressively harder to survive on the way to Round 4.

Chain Knockback

Queen Hippo’s attacks knock units back. If your cats are aligned in a row, a single knockback can chain into a second or third cat. Always spread horizontally or diagonally to prevent chain hits.

Strategy A: Survive to Round 4

This is the safer strategy for early runs. Focus entirely on keeping your cats alive rather than dealing damage. Use tanks and healers, stun or slow her to delay her advances, and retreat to the edges when her speed escalates. You do not need to deal more than a few hundred damage across four rounds if your healer can sustain the party.

Strategy B: Aggressive Burst

If your party has a strong damage setup, you can try to kill her before Round 4. Use teleport or gap-closing abilities to get backstab angles, since hitting from behind bypasses some of her Brace. Ability-based attacks that ignore damage reduction, such as percentage-HP effects or bleed/poison stacks, are highly effective here.

Tips

Never line up your cats. Chain knockback is her biggest source of multi-target damage. Spread them at least two tiles apart in all directions.

Stuns and slows are your best tools. Delaying her extra actions in Round 2 and 3 keeps her from reaching your squishier cats before Round 4.
