Boss
Spinnerette
Multi-phase: starts as Baby Spider (low HP, killing triggers real fight). Phase 1: webs that cocoon units; spiderlings burrow into cats and hatch from corpses. Phase 2: retreats to ceiling, spawns new spider kitten that must be killed to bring her down.
Spinnerette is the final boss of The Caves in Act 1, a giant four-eyed spider queen with 250 HP (300 in Champion form) whose fight is one of the most mechanically complex encounters in the early game. The battle actually begins as a fake-out against One Baby Spider, a seemingly trivial enemy in the center of the arena. Defeating the Spider Kitten or surviving the first round triggers Spinnerette's dramatic entrance from the ceiling. Smart players will use this opening phase to heal up, reposition, and prepare buffs before the real fight begins.
Spinnerette has three primary attacks: a devastating 2x1 frontal bite that can instantly destroy downed targets, web lobbing in a cross pattern across the board, and spider spawning that sends Spiderlings burrowing into your cats. The Spiderling mechanic is particularly dangerous: infested cats that die will permanently lose the cat, as the Spiderlings hatch from corpses. If attacked from behind, Spinnerette enters an Enraged state, gaining damage and speed bonuses but losing the ability to retreat to the ceiling for spawning phases. In Phase 2, she retreats upward and sends down another Spider Kitten with 10 HP; killing it brings her back down. Fire attacks are extremely useful in this fight, as they convert webs into fire tiles and units with Burn or Fire Aspect become completely immune to webbing.
A balanced team of Fighter, Cleric, Hunter, and Tank handles both phases well. Knockback abilities can free webbed units, and the Druid's Crow familiar provides reliable web negation through Aeroblast. Avoid killing infested cats at all costs, as on-death Spiderling hatching means permanent loss. Defeating Spinnerette rewards unique active abilities for each class that survived the fight, including Metronome (Collarless), Paw Breaker (Fighter), Ball of Spiders (Hunter), and Hyper Beam (Mage). She can also drop Spinnerets (a weapon that inflicts Webbed status) and Spider Baby (a head piece that spawns Spiderlings when the wearer takes damage), making her one of the most rewarding bosses in Act 1.
