The Shimmer is a rare and uniquely valuable status-modifier weather effect in Mewgenics that applies random status effects to units each round during combat and, more importantly, grants every surviving cat a random mutation at the end of each battle.

The in-combat random status effects are a mixed bag, similar in spirit to Pandemonium but applied gradually rather than all at once. Each round, units on the field may receive a random positive or negative status effect, creating a slowly evolving set of conditions that requires ongoing adaptation. Some rounds might grant your cats beneficial buffs; others might apply debilitating debuffs. The randomness is manageable with Cleanse abilities and tactical flexibility.

The real prize of The Shimmer is the post-combat mutation. Mutations in Mewgenics are permanent genetic traits that affect a cat's abilities, stats, and breeding potential. Normally, mutations are rare and difficult to acquire, requiring specific furniture, events, or breeding outcomes. The Shimmer bypasses all of that, handing out a free random mutation after every single fight.

This makes The Shimmer exceptionally valuable for your long-term breeding program. Cats that fight under The Shimmer accumulate mutations that can be passed to future generations, enriching your bloodline's genetic pool. A single chapter under The Shimmer can provide more mutations than dozens of chapters under other weather effects.

The Shimmer is frequently offered as one of three choices during The Crater's scripted mid-chapter weather-choice event. Unless the other options are critically needed for survival, always choose The Shimmer. The mutation rewards far outweigh the inconvenience of random status effects during combat. This is one of the strongest universal recommendations in the Mewgenics community.

The Shimmer can also appear naturally in other biomes and is classified as a rare weather.
